Lulwanda Children’s Home opened its doors on December 1, 2004, the first children’s home established by the Grace International Children’s Foundation (GICF). Lulwanda now houses and cares for 90 orphaned or abandoned children between the ages of 3 and 10.
Before coming to Lulwanda Children’s Home, many of these children had no one to care for them, while others were living in desperate conditions with aging and overburdened grandparents. Now the children are thriving in a healthy, nurturing environment. The children not only live at Lulwanda, they also attend school on site, learning basic life skills, English, math, and a variety of other subjects. Five classes – pre-school, kindergarten, and first, second and third grades – are held simultaneously for five hours daily, five days per week. The children receive regular medical care, nutritious meals, and lots of outdoor play time – all in a warm family environment that promotes bonding between the children, their house mothers, and the rest of the staff members.
Facilities at the Lulwanda Children’s Home include boys’ and girls’ dormitories and bathhouses, living areas, classrooms, a playground, a kitchen, laundry room, and a large garden which provides some of the food for the Home.
An expansion program in 2007 provided an additional dormitory, doubling the Home’s capacity to 90 children, as well as two blocks of three classrooms, accommodating the educational program from kindergarten through the primary grades. This construction program also enhanced the functioning of the facility by providing an Administrator’s House on site. The Administrator's house was completed during December 2006 and the two classroom blocks in April 2007, with the dormitory finished in June 2007. The very next month, 25 of the 45 additional children were taken in for a total of 70 children. In January 2008 an additional 20 children arrived bringing the totoal to 90.
