There are a number of opportunities for you to contribute towards specific Lulwanda projects or programs. A donation designated for one of these projects would make a huge improvement to the long term future of Lulwanda:
Stove for Indoor Kitchen
Most of the cooking at Lulwanda is done at the “outdoor” kitchen with the large fire pits and gigantic cooking pots. But we also have an indoor kitchen where much of the fruit and meat is prepared, and things like cakes and pastries are cooked. The stove/oven burns propane and is used heavily. Unfortunately it is very old and in poor condition – they use a wooden board leaned against the oven door to keep it closed. A large commercial quality stove could be purchased for right around $1000 and would make life much easier in the kitchen.
Primary School Uniforms
The children wear their school uniforms all day long, so after a year of constant use they are getting quite ragged. Two locally made uniforms (so that they have one clean and one in the laundry) plus 2 pairs of stockings will cost around 72,000 shillings or about $25 per child. Please consider a $25 donation to provide a new uniform for one primary school LCH child; in total we have 50 children with this need.
(We will as usual buy a Christmas gift of clothing for each child this year, but that will be personal clothing not a school uniform.)
As with uniforms, the children’s school shoes see a lot of wear and tear in a year of constant use. Good quality black school shoes cost about 70,000 shillings per pair, or $25 per child. You could provide funding for a number of pairs of shoes, or if you wish, you could fund a child or a few children to get a new school uniform and new school shoes, for $50 per child.
Lulwanda badly needs an incinerator to dispose of medical wastes and sanitary napkins. A donation of $500 would pay for the incinerator, which we have needed for some time.
Secondary Boarding School Fees
Lulwanda has an excellent Primary School, but we do not have secondary school facilities. As is common in Uganda, our secondary school children attend boarding schools, which have cost roughly $1800 per year. We have worked hard to bring those costs down, such that sending our primary school graduates (47 children this year) to Secondary Boarding School costs about $1500 per child annually.
Consider making a designated gift of $1500 to cover the cost of one child in secondary boarding school.
