Lulwanda Children’s Home provides 120 orphaned and abandoned children in Uganda, Africa with new hope for a better life. In a loving, Christian environment they are provided with a warm bed, nutritious meals, medical care and creative playtime. Lulwanda Primary School (LPS) is located on site: children in that age group not only live at Lulwanda, they attend LPS, learning basic life skills, English, math, and a variety of other subjects. Pre-school, kindergarten, and first through seventh grades are held simultaneously for five hours daily, five days per week. Children are taught the curriculum of the Ugandan Ministry for Education, with supplemental educational materials and subjects added from abroad. Instruction is in English, the official language of Uganda.
The Lulwanda children are joined by students from the surrounding communities, who attend LPS on a fee basis. These community children help cover operating costs and provide much-needed daily contact between the Lulwanda orphans and children in Uganda and families.
Based on results from the Primary Leaving Exam (a standardized Uganda-wide exam taken by all P7 students), Lulwanda Primary School is truly providing an excellent education. The results of the 2013 P7 PLE showed Lulwanda Primary ranking 2nd out of 29 private schools in Mbale District, 4th out of all 138 private and government schools in Mbale District, and in the top 10% across Uganda.
Following the British system, primary school consists of P1 through P7. Upon graduation from P7, our secondary school students attend selected boarding schools in the area. As of mid-2016, 9 children attend the Lulwanda pre-school, 45 LCH children attend LPS, 63 attend secondary boarding schools, 2 attend a trade school, and 1 child attends a special school for handicapped students.
A substantial college scholarship fund has already been established for Lulwanda. It is our hope that many of the children will qualify to attend university, giving them the opportunity to rise above poverty and become leaders in their country through a strong education.
